This is probably the number one question all newbies ask when they first get started with a website. So how to make money in affiliate programs, where do I start? Where do I find an affiliate online opportunity to start making money from my website?
It is not as complicated as it sounds, but there are several choices that you can need to keep in mind. Depending on what your website is about, from the theme to the niche, will greatly influence the best way to monetize your site.
Not every website is the same because there are literally hundreds of niches and millions of websites in each niche. This is fortunate for everyone. Can you realize how mundane the Internet would be if every website looked the same? Ugh!
Not every customer is the same nor are they all looking for answers. So lets look at several different ways you can make money with your website:
- Amazon Products
- Affiliate Programs
- Adsense Ads and other Advertising programs
- Building a list
- Relevant advertisers
- Create and sell your own products
Remember to always focus on this thought when you write on your site:
How can I help my customer where they are satisfied
Let me explain what the above statement means by giving you an example.
I had an eBay business and store that wasn’t making very much money. I wanted to enter the Internet with my own website to make extra income. So I did some investigating and I saw that it was possible to have your very own website.
But at the time you had to either know how to write computer coding, or hire a website builder.
I decided to go with SiteBuildIt.com. At that time Site Built It were the only hosting company that allowed you to build your website for free. It was using their “editor” that all you had to do was “copy and paste” from your home computer to their WYSIWYG editor.
I wanted to market all the big-ticket products like electronics so I could make lots of money. But I had to get my wife’s permission first, because the membership was expensive.
To make a long story short, in order to get my wife’s approval I had to build a website for her, not me. So the first product I intended on promoting on (our) site was a homemade product made by my wife. I say this was my first site but technically, it was not. I had been given permission to create a website, even though it was a website for my wife.
My wife was a chef and she wanted to make and sell gift baskets. These gift baskets were going to be cooking products from her home state of Louisiana. I had no idea how to promote these gift baskets. I researched other sites that were promoting gift baskets.
There were all kinds, flowers baskets, sausage baskets, chocolate baskets, fruit baskets, etc, etc. I was just going to be another gift basket website among the millions of other sites on the Internet. I wanted our site to be different. To be unique. That is the only way that you stand a chance in competing with all the other sites. You have to be unique! You have to be different!
We had to decide on a theme first. My wife had intended her site to be called “Cajun Country Gift Baskets.” Since my wife was from Louisiana, and also being Cajun herself, that was only fitting for her site to be named.
I should have named her site what she wanted and be done with it. But I had other ideas. I thought that gift baskets was a crazy product to sell. Was there any money to be made selling gift baskets? There were millions of websites selling gift-baskets. But “Hindsight” is always 20-20.
Since I was the webmaster I wanted the site to be named Cajun Country Foods, since basically a gift basket is food, and Cajun foods and spices was what we were going to sell. That domain name had already been taken, but I insisted, so we bought the domain name Cajun-Country-Foods.com, with hyphens between the words.
I knew that we first had to have traffic to our website before we could monetize it. I had been doing research in website marketing and the magic number of average monthly visitors was around 200 at that time. So I first started writing about Cajun foods, the history, the spices, the ingredients, etc, etc. Then I started adding recipes of popular Cajun dishes.
It took about two months for us to start averaging that many unique visitors a month. I was ready to start monetizing the site. I added Google Adsense to the site. As our site gains popularity and more visitors we could start making a lot of extra money through the advertisements on our site. Every time a visitor clicks on one of these advertisements, we get paid. The amount paid by Google is all dependent on how much the original advertisement was sold for.
I was all set to start adding my wife’s products to the site. I had spent some grueling hours at the computer building the store in which was going to display all the baskets she wanted to start selling. Then the unimaginable happened! I never suspected this in my life! My wife had just been diagnosed with Cancer!
I had to abandon the website. My wife was more important than the extra money that we needed from the website. So, needless to say, I no longer have this website, nor did we ever sell anything from this first website. My wife eventually died a few months after her diagnoses. But this experience did prove that there is a market for the products that we intended on selling.
It is snapshot of what could-have-been had I continued with the website. But I had lost not only the creator of these products, but also my best and closest friend. Susan was a champion in her own right and I am truly blessed by all she taught me.
1. Amazon Products
The very first product that I listed on our site was a cookbook by a very popular Cajun Chef. A lot of his recipes were on our site anyway so I basically was promoting his cookbook. I went to Amazon.com and applied to be an associate of their website. This gives me the privilege to sell anything that Amazon promotes and sells. So if a visitor to my site sees a cookbook I have listed and clicks on this link it takes them to Amazon.com website. Everything this visitor buys at Amazon at this time, I get paid a 4% commission.
In my case the cookbooks were not very expensive. I would have made less than a dollar per book sold. But if that same customer who I sent to Amazon was to buy a $1200 TV too, that commission would have netted me $48. The advantage is as I said before if they purchase anything at all, not even related to your product you still get paid.
2. Affiliate Programs
So with my wife’s site up and running I needed other products to add to this site. I started looking for affiliate products to promote from this site. The way I did this was go to Google, type in the keyword of the product I am interested in, like Cajun Chefs.
Chefs + affiliate programs
At Google I found → About 10,200,000 results. There are other affiliate programs that offer an almost endless supply of products. The most popular affiliate networks are:
- Commission Junction, or CJ.com
These are just some of the many affiliate program providers that I have used, and still do!
3. Adsense Advertisements and Other Advertising Programs
With my wife’s site I did not add any Adsense ads. I did start using Adsense later on in my career on the second site that I started. I also use another advertising company besides just Adsense, as well as other affiliate programs.
Adsense ads are another way to make money online. You sign up an account with Google Adsense, after approval you can log in and get an ad code that you add to your own site. When you add this ad code ads will show in your post, page or sidebar.
When a visitor to your website clicks on one of the advertisements, you get paid! The amounts can range anywhere from $.01 up to $20.00 per click! You are allowed to use up to three ad blocks per page. You are also allowed to customize it somewhat, so that it fits well with your color scheme and theme of your site.
You can even find plugins that you can add to your wordpress website that make it as easy as possible to add the ads where ever you wish.
Remember these are just a sample of the many programs available to you. Some of these advertising programs you can sign up for are:

4. Building a List
Another great way to make money with a website is to build a list, by capturing your visitors email addresses. Any time you sell something from your website, you should get your customers email address. Offering a monthly/weekly newsletter, or free download of an eBook is an easy way to get their email address. Once you have their email address, you can send product information to them whenever you wish, and continue to sell the same customer over and over again.
The easiest way to capture these address is by using a “autoresponder service”, like Aweber, or GetResponse. It is easy to use and it keeps track of your emails, follow up emails and broadcast emails to your different lists.
However, an autoresponder service is not free, so make sure you have everything already to go before you hire an autoresponder service. MailChimp, as far as I know, is the only service that is free up to 2000 subscribers. But it is Not available to use for a money-making site.

5. Relevant Advertisers
Another way to make some money with your site is by contacting relevant companies and ask if they would like to advertise on your site. This is a good way to use your valuable real estate (yoursite.com) as an asset to grow your wealth. This is a great avenue for a Blog website to help defer their costs when the site does not offer any products or affiliate products for sale.
Of course before you would travel this road you will want to have web traffic and monthly statistics as proof of your traffic. The more popular your site becomes, the more valuable the space becomes. So to get the premium dollars you will need to show the value of your site to potential advertisers.
6. Create and Sell Your Own Product
I would highly recommend anyone new at Internet marketing to consider affiliate marketing before attempting to sell your own products. The reason I recommend this is simply because you are learning how to communicate to your visitor. You are going through an immense learning curve when first starting to market yourself online. Once you learn how to communicate to your visitor, to build traffic and learn how to build trust then you will find success at selling your own products.
The most profitable products you can possibly sell are nearly always products you produce or make. This should be everyone’s long-term goal only after you learn how to be a good webmaster. Write an eBook. Everyone is an expert on something. Tell the world of your expertise. Believe me, there is someone out there that can benefit from your knowledge.
